BioChar Applications

Biochar blended into the root zone as part of a soil improvement plan.

Good soil versus compacted soil diagram

What it is

Biochar is a stable, porous carbon material made by heating wood in low oxygen. In soil it can improve water holding and give microbes habitat, especially in degraded or sandy soils.

When it makes sense

Compacted, low-organic-matter, or sandy soils, usually combined with radial trenching or a soil renovation.

How we do it

  • Start with soil information so the amendment fits the site.
  • Use quality-tested biochar and charge it with compost or another biologically active material before use.
  • Blend it into trenches or topsoil. It is not surface-dusted.
  • Follow up with mulch and watering.

Standards we follow

  • ANSI A300 Soil Management standard
  • ISA Best Management Practices: Soil Management for Urban Trees (2nd edition)

Good to know

Results depend on tree species, biochar quality, and soil. It helps most when it addresses the site's main limitation, and it will not revive a severely declining tree. We treat it as one tool in a soil plan, not a cure-all.
