A biology-focused soil treatment used with other root-zone care.

Tree physiology diagram

What it is

Compost tea is a liquid made by steeping compost in water, often with aeration, and applied to the soil to add microbes and soluble organic matter.

When it makes sense

Trees in soils that lack organic matter or biological activity, as part of a broader soil and mulch plan.

How we do it

  • Use fresh, high quality compost and apply the tea soon after brewing.
  • Apply to the soil by drench or injection. It is not a pesticide.
  • Base any fertilizer decisions on soil or foliar testing, not guesswork.
  • Pair with mulch and good watering.

Standards we follow

  • ANSI A300 Soil Management standard
  • ISA Best Management Practices: Soil Management for Urban Trees
  • ISA Best Management Practices: Plant Health Care

Good to know

Research on compost tea for urban trees is still limited and results are mixed. We use it as a supporting treatment and say so plainly, and it works best alongside mulch and decompaction.
