Tree Risk Assessments

← Tree Work · Inspection and Assessments

Structured, written evaluations of how likely a tree is to fail and what could be hit.

What it is

A tree risk assessment follows a standard method to rate risk. It combines the likelihood of failure, the likelihood the tree hits a target, and the consequences, and results in an overall rating of low, moderate, high, or extreme.

When it makes sense

Large trees near homes, roads, play areas, or event spaces. HOA/POA common areas. After a storm or a visible defect such as decay, cracks, or leaning.

How we do it

  • Choose the assessment level: Level 1 is a limited visual look from a set perspective, Level 2 is a basic 360 degree ground-based inspection of the tree and site, and Level 3 adds advanced methods when needed.
  • Identify targets, site conditions, defects, and the likely failure mode.
  • Rate the risk and give mitigation options along with a recommended re-inspection interval.
  • Provide a written report you can keep on file.

Standards we follow

  • ANSI A300 Tree Risk Assessment standard
  • ISA Best Management Practices: Tree Risk Assessment (2nd edition)

Good to know

Risk cannot be reduced to zero. The aim is to understand it and bring it to a level the owner can accept.
