Storm Resilience Starts Before the Storm: Managing Mature Trees Proactively

Tree care often becomes urgent immediately before or after severe weather. That is understandable, but it is also the least efficient time to begin thinking about tree risk. Storm resilience is built over years through tree selection, structural development, inspection, soil protection, pruning, and decisions about what occupies the potential failure zone.

Risk is not the same thing as a defect

Large trees naturally contain features that can look alarming: old wounds, cavities, dead branches, included unions, decay, leans, fungal fruiting bodies, and asymmetrical crowns. These observations matter, but they do not independently determine risk. A professional assessment considers the likelihood of failure, the likelihood that a person or property would be struck, and the consequences if failure occurs.

That distinction matters after storms, when understandable concern can lead to unnecessary removal of trees that may still be manageable.

Proactive work creates more options

A young tree with poor branch architecture may respond well to structural pruning. A mature tree with a developing defect may sometimes be managed with selective pruning, an appropriate support system, target management, monitoring, or other measures. Soil and root-zone problems may also need attention because anchorage and tree vigor do not begin at the first branch.

Waiting until a defect becomes severe can narrow those options to removal.

Storm planning is increasingly an urban-forestry issue

Recent 2026 research involving urban-forestry professionals in the northeastern and southeastern United States examined how communities prepare for tree-related storm impacts. Collaboration was reported across tree risk assessment, routine maintenance, emergency response, inventories, and strategic planning. The broader point applies to individual properties as well: preparation works better when tree management is part of routine planning rather than a reaction to the weather forecast.

The objective is not a risk-free landscape

No living tree can be guaranteed not to fail, particularly in extreme weather. Removing every large tree would eliminate some tree-related hazards while also eliminating shade, habitat, stormwater interception, cooling, carbon storage, and much of the character of a mature landscape.

A more defensible approach is to identify meaningful defects and targets, prioritize the highest-consequence situations, maintain trees that can reasonably be retained, and document changes over time. Storm resilience is not created by panic pruning. It comes from understanding the trees before the wind arrives.

Research context

Recent U.S. research reinforces the value of proactive storm planning. A 2026 survey of 920 urban-forestry professionals in the Northeast and Southeast found collaboration was used for tree-risk assessment, routine maintenance, emergency response, inventories, and strategic planning. This supports a broader management principle: storm resilience is built through inspection, maintenance, planning, and communication before an emergency occurs.
