Trees require soils that can facilitate in oxygen and water processes. Saturated, compacted, and toxic soils are some examples of what trees DON'T need. Sub-surface tree-related problems are more common than you think and if you have us out to check the health of a tree, prepare to watch us dig around the base first. Oxygen exchange at the root collar (or trunk flare) is very important for the health and function of trees. When they are buried, not only can they not breathe as well, but they are more at risk for decay and insect invasion. Keep your flares dry and exposed.
